Why you should you join County Sligo Golf Club
There are many great reasons to play golf if you are not already doing so as studies have shown that you are healthier mentally and physically. It’s a rare game where as a parent you can be playing with your children and when you are a grandparent you can be still playing with them and even their children.
We have members across all the ages and abilities from a very active and successful youth section with over 120 members to an active senior’s section. We do have some of the best facilities in the country with 2 golf courses, the Colt Championship links which is ranked in the Top 10 courses in Ireland and the challenging 9 hole Bomore Links. We also have a driving range which is open late each evening and we have excellent short game facilities. In addition, we have a modern clubhouse with bar and restaurant the details of which can be seen on other parts of this site.
New to Golf
Each summer we hold a Get into Golf programme over 8 weeks to give potential members a taste for the game, its rules and the history of and what it means to be a member of our club. This is also a chance to meet others socially who may also be thinking of taking up the game but are more likely to do so with a partner. Our 9 hole course in Bomore is an excellent course to try golf on as there is generally not as many players playing there. Following on from that we encourage players who may be interested to join the Bomore club and can play the course and use all the facilities of the club at any time.
New Members
We run competitions every weekend of the year of varying formats. We have Open draws so that new members can meet other members. In the Winter we have a Winter League which is played over 8 rounds of 9 holes four ball where approximately 60 pairs take part. Each round you play a different team so this helps the new member to get to know fellow members. Partners are organised for new members if and when required. The Winter League almost always have a handful of Father Son combinations again across a wide age range.
When the Easter comes , so does the West of Ireland Amateur golf championship bringing some of the best amateur golfers to Rosses Point … remember Rory McIllroy won it twice and Shane Lowry and Padraig Harrington won it also. You can come along and enjoy the golf and the atmosphere and you can also be part of that by volunteering for one of the many roles required.
The golfing season kicks in big time following the West as we move back to playing 18 hole competitions including some of the big matchplay qualifiers get under way. In May sees the start of the Inter Club competitions where teams across all handicap ranges do battle with other clubs. Again being involved or on team panels and/or going for trials can be very rewarding competitively and socially as friendships made on the battleground of Club matches usually last a lifetime.
The big social golfing event of the year is the Mixed Foursomes League which takes place over 4 or 5 rounds from May to August. Non golfing partners (you don’t have to be a member) are encouraged to take part and play 9 holes for fun before retiring to the Club House for a well-deserved sumptuous Buffet meal followed by entertainment.
The County Sligo Golf club has a scheduled program of outings and activities for new and existing members of both the Ladies and Mens Section. The Club encourages and promotes the inclusion and integration of members.
For the beginner golfer we have the Bomore Get into Golf Scheme where each year a group of Ladies are introduced to golf by a program of lessons, mentoring and organisied events. For the improvers right up to the expert golfer we have interclub teams. Members participate in team training and progress their golf through the various levels of competition. County Sligo Golf Club ladies are proud to say we have a number of Connaught and National medals. Golfing with a broad range of partners helps players develop and improve their golf, and generate new friendships. To support and encourage the inclusion of new and existing members, draws for playing partners are organised regularly, particularly for major competitions and the weekly Tuesday competition.
The year starts on new years day party at the Captains Drive-in.
The two main days in the Lady Members Golfing Calender are the Lady Captains and Lady Presidents day that allow all the Lady members to meet and enjoy the glamour and crack.
There are many fun competitions throughout the year, a particular favourite is the “MFL”, run over four Fridays during the summer. A mixed golf competition, food and presentation format allows golfers of all levels to mix, play golf, and socialise. In the current climate of time pressures we have developed a nine hole competition on Tuesdays and Thursdays which is proving very popular with all members.
The festival of golf “Open Week” in August is a great opportunity for family and friends to reunite and enjoy a variety of golf, entertainment and local music festivals.
Throughout the year we have many feature evenings and Charity events, these events prove very popular with members and friends.
Fashion shows, cookery demos, flower arranging, health and happiness, yoga, invited speakers on varied topics such Golf, Sports psychology have all featured. The comfortable modern club house is an excellent venue for these types of events.
