The Junior Programme is one that we are very proud of here in Rosses Point and is seen as the Gold standard for clubs throughout Ireland. We currently have approx. 140 boys and girls involved from the age of 10 up to 18. Rosses Point has recently been selected as a coaching centre for Connacht Boys.
What makes us so is several things but among the keys ones are the dedication and commitment of the Junior Committee and helpers and the excellent facilities of the 9 Hole Bomore golf course adjacent to the Colt Championship course.
The Junior Golf Programme is led by our Junior Convenors for Boys and Girls and we also have a Junior Captains. In total there are currently 130 Junior members of club ranging in ages from 10 to 18 and we encourage the older boys to assist the younger ones at every opportunity. For beginners we can organise clubs / bags balls etc. to avoid any unnecessary outlay for the parents should their child not wish to pursue the game.
There are competitions on a weekly basis , plus knockout competitions , away day trips to local clubs and attendance at Connacht Championships for those on teams and those who have reached the required standard.
The golfing season for the Juniors starts in April and goes right through until September with weekly competitions and lessons on a Saturday afternoon for all ages and abilities. It is our hope that all our Juniors develop a lifelong love for the game and for those of them that display special talents we encourage and assist them to reach their full potential. Several of our Juniors have gone on to great achievements in Golf including Sean Flanagan who has won the North of Ireland Amateur Trophy and has played for Ireland at Senior level, Barry Anderson winner of the West of Ireland 2017 and Alex Gleeson current Irish International.
The social side is very important and there is certainly plenty of opportunities for children and parents (both golfing and non golfing) to socialise at the various Junior Golf events such as the fun day barbecues in Bomore , Family golf competitions , prizegivings in the Club and the Childrens Xmas party with Santa.
There are so many benefits for young people to take up the game and here are a few
Spend Quality Time with Family: Golf can be an event around which all family members can gather for several hours. It is a great opportunity for parents to provide positive feedback and encouragement to children. There are several family team days at the club which are a round of fun golf followed by great social occasions in the clubhouse
Etiquette and Values: Golf has a rich tradition of etiquette which lives on today. Playing golf teaches youth how to behave towards self and others, and imparts values such as truthfulness and strength during adversity.
Health: Golf is an active game and is less injury prone than contact sports. Conditioning for golf improves strength of core muscles that support the spine, improves flexibility, and allows participants the opportunity to be active and fit.
Controlling Emotions: In golf as in life, there are achievements and disappointments. Learning from mistakes and overcoming obstacles improves a player’s game, and teaches them to optimistically carry out the same pattern in day to day life.
Fun: Young people grow up too quickly in today’s busy, technological world. Gathering with friends to play golf gives young golfers the opportunity to spend enjoyable times in friendly competition You never know who you will meet on a golf course and interaction with others allow kids to develop social skills.
Prepare for business: Golf is a sport that helps prepare kids and teens for careers in business and other professional arenas.
Learn etiquette: Young people should play golf because it is based on characteristics that are sometimes missing in our society. Golf places an emphasis on honesty and etiquette. In golf there is no judge or referee; instead, players govern themselves and fellow competitors.
Spend time with family: Golf is a game that encourages family participation.
We pride ourselves on our friendly welcome and organisation of the Junior Golf programme.
We would love to hear from you if you have a child that might want to give it a go.
