Westmeath are having a wonderful year.
The lake county won the Tailteann Cup in gaelic football, hosted the fleadh cheoil and won the Rose of Tralee title.
The junior cup was targeted also as a further goal, but County Sligo had other ideas last Saturday August 20th in Hudson Bay.
An element of gloom hung over the event as the weather took a plunge for the worse. The ladies teed off in torrential rain and a threat of suspension was a real possibility.
However the clouds lifted and the intermediate ladies team and Junior Cup men’s team did battle with Galway Bay and Athlone respectively.
Our junior cup team started well and we grew in confidence on the front nine.
David McDermott led the charge in match 1 and was followed closely by Ronan Forkin.
Match 3-5 comprised of the young talent namely Tom Flanagan, Daniel Flanagan and John Paul Flanagan. Our reserves on the day were Conor Meade and Christopher Longworth.
David played on a provincial Junior Cup winning team in 1997 and his experience was to the fore as he won 4&3 in the opening match.
Ronan was to finish strongly in match 2 and win 2&1.
John Paul would come of age on the 14th hole, displaying nerves of steel.
Tom Flanagan was having a tremendous battle in match, which was set to go up 19.
Daniel Flanagan had played wonderful golf on the day, and it was fitting that he secured the winning point on 18. John Paul would also follow up with victory 2&1 to complete a memorable day for all. Unfortunately our ladies met a superior Galway Bay outfit on the day.
We look forward to the all Ireland series in Knightsbrook, County Meath from the 15th-18th of September.
