Tony breezes to victory
WEST: County Sligo has nine golfers potentially contesting this week’s West of Ireland championship sponsored by Radisson Blu.
Gary McDermott, Sean Flanagan, Steffan O’Hara, Stephen Brady and Declan Reidy are already assured of spots on the timesheet when the West begins next Friday. Four more compete on Wednesday in the qualifier. Shane Underwood, Syreth Heavey, David Brady and Mark Rooney will be playing for one of the eight spots being contested by a field of 93 players. We wish the lads all the best in the qualifiers and the main tournament.
Others playing in the championship with strong County Sligo links are Ballincar’s Barry Anderson, an Irish international now playing out of Royal Co Dublin; Mark Morrisey, who is a member of Mount Wolsey and also Co Sligo while studying at Sligo IT; former Point member Alex Gleeson now at The Castle, Dublin and last year’s winner Rory McNamara (Headford, Co Meath) whose mother is from Sligo.
Once again, the matchplay rounds can be followed live on www.countysligogolfclub.com.
OPEN: If you fancy playing in the “West”, you’ll get your chance on Thursday and Friday, April 24-25. The course will be set up on the blue tees for the West of Ireland Open Fourball. Entry is €10 a pair for members and €60 a pair for visitors.
FOURBALL: Saturday’s fourball was played off the white tees but scoring was still tough with holes 11 and 12 wrecking many a card into the wind. Soren Peterson and Nicky Harte collected just three points from holes 11 to 13 but still stormed home to win the weekend’s fourball betterball by three points. The two dovetailed superbly, amassing 41 points for their day’s work. Sean McLoughlin boasted the “top shot” last weekend with a hole in one at the 16th. No holes in one this weekend but we had the next best thing when David Godsell popped his shot in for a two on the par four 10th. It ensured David and partner Donal Heraughty clinched second place with 38 points on the countback.
RESULT: Saturday, April 12, four ball betterball: 1, Soren Peterson (10) and Nicky Harte (16), 41pts; 2, David Godsell (17) and Donal Heraughty (18), 38pts (B9). Entries 45 pairs.
TELEVISION: Captain Anton Murphy and Director of Golf David O’Donovan are available for autographs after making their TV debuts on The Golf Show. The show is aired by Irish TV on the Showcase Channel on Sky. Both David and Anton were great ambassadors for the course on the show.
