COUNTY SLIGO GOLF CLUB WEEK ENDED 8th JANUARY 2012

Neafsey Cup
The annual competition for the Neafsey Cup was played on 27th December. This competition is for past pupils of Rosses Point and Lower Rosses National Schools. The first competition was played in 1988. In 1989 the retired school Principal the late Jim Neafsey , a past Captain of County Sligo Golf Club, donated a cup, which is now known as the Neafsey Cup. The past pupils eagerly look forward to getting together renewing old friendships at Christmas time. A total of 105 competed this year, the winner was Tony Cunningham who also won the cup in 1992. A most enjoyable presentation took place afterwards.

Captains Drive In
On New Years Day, our new Captains, Lady Captain Marguerite Dent and the Men’s Captain Bryan Kilfeather hit two great drives on the first fairway in front of a large crowd of family and friends. The Captains spoke of the coming year. The County Sligo Golf Club Male Voice Choir led by Niamh Crowley provided entertainment.

Round 6 of the DIAGEO Winter League was played on Sunday last.

Joint leaders of Section 1 are Aidan Tinsley & Aidan Power and Ken Henry & Mark Flanagan on twelve points. Pat Lyons & Kieran O’ Brien move into third place on eleven points with Robert Fitzpatrick & Damien Higgins and Ger Quinlivan & John Feeney on ten points. This is the tightest group in the league.Three matches were drawn in Section 2 resulting in little change to the table positions. The leaders are Gary Mc Dermott & Alan Kelly and Michael Mc Gowan & David Taylor.  A win for Donal Barry & Michael Hannigan puts them into contention to qualify for the final day. In Section 3 wins for Jackie Mc Mahon & Tony Cunningham ; Robert Kelly & Gary Devins and Jim Mulcahy & John Mc Manus puts them into joint first position on twelve points.Joint leaders on thirteen points in Section 4 are John Mc Namara & Shane Underwood and Michael Mc Namara & John Keane. On twelve points in joint third position are Frank Gleeson & Gerry Cannon with Niall Stafford & Anton Murphy.The leaders in Section 5 are Conor Frazer & Ciaran O 'Gara ; Patrick Ward & Tommy Kelly ; Brian O’ Sullivan & Ronan Keane and Brian Hampson & Eric Gilroy, all on twelve points.In Section 6 Fergal O’ Flaherty & David Mc Guinness had their fifth win and lead the group on fifteen points. Wins for Padraig Mc Manus & Vincent Mc Gee and John Mc Hugh & Aidan Doyle puts them in joint second on twelve points with David Conneely & Derek Wynne.

Next Round of the DIAGEO Winter League is Sunday January 22nd.
