Doing the rounds

YOUNG Ben Rooney rammed home two make-or-break putts to keep Co Sligo’s Jimmy Bruen hopes alive for 2014.

Everything hinged on anchormen Ben and Aidan Doyle’s result against Boyle as they studied their putt on the 17th — a 15-footer to keep them in the match. Ben raked it in to go on to the 18th one down in a match that they had never led. With ice flowing though his veins, Ben repeated his form on the 18th, holing a six-footer to take the match to sudden death. With the momentum behind them, they closed it out on the 19th. Congratulations to the team and captain Pat Neiland.

WINNERS: John McCallion was in fine form the previous weekend when he signed for 41pts in Saturday’s stableford. It edged him in ahead of Kevin Savage. Donal Cronin, who has been showing good form in recent weeks, took third spot on a countback.

Another finely-tuned engine is the golfing game of John McDermott who motored home with a 74 gross to win the Junior Scratch Cup, sponsored by Allied Irish Bank. A great result off six handicap. Garth McManus finished second with a 76 gross. The Intermediate Scratch Cup honours went to Mark Flanagan with an 82 gross, one better than Niall Stafford.

The laurel leaves for Saturday’s Fourball Betterball were donned by club stalwarts Fred Perry and Sean Sweeney with 44pts. John McCallion continued his fine form from the previous weekend by taking second spot with partner Kirk Poth — despite having his handicap trimmed by two shots.
