"Welcome to Sligo Golf Club"
The Carr Mara Golf Trust was founded in 2006 and was conceived by Joe McAleese, then honorary secretary of Portmarnock in Dublin, and Len Horan, then President of Winged Foot Golf Club in New York. The trust was set up to celebrate a pair of sporting greats who passed away a few years earlier: Joe Carr, Irish amateur golfing legend and member of the World Golf Hall of Fame – and Wellington Mara, longtime owner of the New York Giants and member of Winged Foot Golf Club. The Trust had two main objectives, a bi -annual golf tournament between leading Irish and US golf clubs and a bi-annual 4 year scholardship for a young Irish man or woman to Fordham University in New York City. The golf competition will be competed for biannually with the host club alternating between Ireland and the US every two years. The inaugural Carr Mara Golf tournament was held in 2007 at Portmarnock Golf Club, Dublin, Ireland. Ten golf clubs participated in the first tournament which was won by the Olympic Golf Club San Francisco, California.
The number of clubs increased to 14 for the 2009 event which was held at the world famous Winged Foot Golf Club and was won by Bel Air Golf Club, Los Angeles, California. The participants were: Ireland: Ballybunion, County Louth, County Sligo, Lahinch, Portmarnock, Royal Portrush and Sutton. USA: Belair, Garden City, Oak Hill, Oakmount Country Club, Pine Valley, The Olympic Club and Winged Foot.
The 2011 event will once again be held in Ireland when the hosts will be County Sligo Golf Club in Rosses Point.
