Fred Daly victory
THE Fred Daly team captained by Steffan O’Hara won a very tight match against a gallant Roscommon team on Sunday. With Roscommon having the home advantage, the first four matches were played at their course and the last three at County Sligo. David Brady, playing at number one, beat his interprovincial team mate, Sean Doyle, by two holes. Cian Feeney won a tight match on the 18th against Ross Murphy Sweeney, a son of a former County Sligo member, Lynn Sweeney. Cian hit a glorious 5 iron to 8 feet on the 18th to win. TJ Ford played well but was beaten 2 and 1 and Paddy Bird was well beaten by the exceptional play of Alan Hill. And so the four matches in Roscommon were tied at 2 all and, after Luke Armstrong had won well at home, the winning point was won by Conor Wynne. In what was a very tight game, Conor’s opponent birdied the 14th to draw level but Conor prevailed by one hole. Joseph Keyes, playing the anchor role, came from 2 down with 2 to go only to be beaten on the 19th by a nephew of another former County Sligo member, Ken Kearney. There was good support at home and away. Well done again to Steffan and his assistants, John Gilmartin and Declan Reidy. The next round is the Connacht Semi-final which will take place on the 4th of July at a venue to be confirmed.
