Mens' Captain's Message

Dear Members,

I am honoured to be chosen as the 95th Captain of this wonderful golf club that is recognised throughout the golfing world as a serious test of golf located in magical surroundings.  A trip to Rosses Point is always something to look forward to.

This year our Competitions Chairman, Michael Whelan and his hard working committee have put together an exciting diary to ensure that members and visitors will enjoy their golf throughout the year.  Our Sponsorship Chairman, Gary Devins has had considerable success in attracting sponsorship in these difficult times.  Please give your support by participating in competitions and attending prize presentations particularly of sponsored events.

This year I trust that members will keep up a reasonable pace of play so that slow play does not take away from the pleasure and enjoyment of the round of golf.  I intend to work closely with the Links Chairman, Paddy Morgan, the Links Committee and Ross Collins, our course superintendant to help speed up the pace of play by insuring that the course is more playable.  Your support will be greatly appreciated.

This year we will be making some changes to the course on the recommendations of our course architect and agronomist and these will be put before the members for approval at a special general meeting early in the year.  We also intend to progress the driving range project in Bomore and I would sincerely hope to strike the first shot on it before the end of the year.

I am looking forward to the West of Ireland Championship over the Easter weekend where the best amateur golfers in these islands test themselves against our world class course.  The West of Ireland has become a rite of passage for all young golfers who wish to achieve at the highest level as out champions list clearly shows.

I would ask members to make themselves available for team selection and the surest way to impress your team captain is by your consistent good playing performance.  I am regularly reminded by the current Competitions Chairman that he was a member of the last winning Pierce Purcell team, sometime in the last century.

May I wish you all an enjoyable and successful golfing year in 2010.

Pat Forkan
Captain 2010
